Abstract

This volume is dedicated to the study of late medieval and early modern liturgical objects, once known as ornamenta sacra. It encompasses a wide range of objects made of various materials and techniques which are not only essential for the rites, but also hold a central position in the religious and artistic production of the past. The contributions to this volume understand them at the heart of a system of complex relationships which make them contribute to their religious functions, but also to their aesthetic, symbolic and social ones: relationships with the men who commissioned, produced and manipulated them, but also with liturgical time and space; relationships too between these different objects, as also with the prescriptive and spiritual frameworks which dictate or accompany their uses. It is the life of these objects that is here recounted, objects invested with value at one and the same time religious, financial and aesthetic.

Abstract

"Religion is never simply there. In Religion and the Everyday Life of Manichaeans in Kellis, Mattias Brand shows where and when ordinary individuals and families in Egypt practiced a Manichaean way of life. Rather than portraying this ancient religion as a well-structured, totalizing community, the fourth-century papyri sketch a dynamic image of lived religious practice, with all the contradictions, fuzzy boundaries, and limitations of everyday life. Following these microhistorical insights, this book demonstrates how family life, gift-giving, death rituals, communal gatherings, and book writing are connected to our larger academic debates about religious change in late antiquity"--

Abstract

The terms 'religious association' or 'cult association' are regularly usecl in scholarship, but their use and applicability have been in need of critical re-assessment for some time. In an attempt to find a more nuanced approach ancl gain a better understanding of the formation, organisation, and aims of ancient associations, this volume seeks to elucidate the wicler context(s) of associations' religious as well as social and cultural dimensions. A series of questions have shaped the volume's agenda: How and to what extent did religion inform the activities of ancient associations? What was the role of so-caIlecl religious associations in promoting social, political, cultural, ancl/or economic life in post-classical poleis? What role did religion play in associations' self-representation and in thcir relations with inclividuals, groups, local authorities, and/or external powers? To what extent were associations responsible (within their region or more ~idely) fOl" religious innovation, for example the introduction of new cuits or the introduction of new cultic practices? All in all, the papers clemonstrate that important insights can be gained fram consiclering the multifarious aspects of associations in close conjunction. They iIlustrate how the various dimensions (religious, social, funerary, etc.) of associative life are closely connected, with religious aspects usually taking a prominent place. These aspects informed and expressecl associations' internaI dynamics as weIl as their outward group identity and se1f-representation. Cultic activities and affiliations ultimately inform us about the places of private collectivities in society more broadly

Abstract

"The interest in interdisciplinary research on the experience of religious conversion or spiritual transformation grows progressively. In light of this burgeoning area of study, this volume explores conversion or converting experience in the ancient Mediterranean with attention to early Judaism, early Christianity, and philosophy in the Roman empire. The contributions include both historical and philological reconstructions relying on source material and utilizing interdisciplinary approaches. Similarly, the authors analyze the literary use of the motif of conversion, the topic of philosophical conversion as well as ritual, social and embodied aspects of spiritual transformation"--

Abstract

For some time interest has been growing in a dialogue between modern scientific research into human cognition and research in the humanities. This ground-breaking volume focuses this dialogue on the religious experience of men and women in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Each chapter examines a particular historical problem arising from an ancient religious activity and the contributions range across a wide variety of both ancient contexts and sources, exploring and integrating literary, epigraphic, visual and archaeological evidence. In order to avoid a simple polarity between physical aspects (ritual) and mental aspects (belief) of religion, the contributors draw on theories of cognition as embodied, emergent, enactive and extended, accepting the complexity, multimodality and multicausality of human life. Through this interdisciplinary approach, the chapters open up new questions around and develop new insights into the physical, emotional, and cognitive aspects of ancient religions.
